Many of us are concerned about the fat around the middle of our body's, we are told over and over agian it is because we eat too much fat so we cut out more fat from our diets leaving us with cravings and over eating of carbs.
Contary to popular belief it is not the fat that causes this but too much carbohydrate. Carbohydrate releases insulin into the blood stream to cope with the sudden rush of sugars (yes carbs are considered sugars by the body). Over long periods of over eating carbs the cells become clogged up with unused glycogen and begin to refuse to accept any more fuel into the cell. The liver then has to deal with the excess and lays it down on the body as fat.
We all need a certain amount of fat in the diet just to ensure the body functions properly, the secret is to choose good fats not the bad fats. Fat and protein are the building blocks of our cells and if we deprive the body of these nutrients we are risking serious health problems long term. Each meal we eat should contain foods from the 4 food groups.

Protein, fat, starchy carbohydrate and non starchy carbohydrate.

It is the starchy carbs that make us eventually put on weight around the heart. Biabetic doctors and nurses call the mid section the insulin meter as it is a good indication of if you are at risk of tyre 2 diabetes. The more fat you have in this area the higher the risk.

The average person requires around 45g to 60g of carbs per day split between either 3 large meals or 3 smaller meals and 2 snacks. People who are heavy exerciers may need upto 90g of carbs per day. Making sure that each meal contains fat and protein will also fill you up for longer reducing the craving attacks mid morning and mid afternoon.

Learn what is a good fat and what is a bad fat and then start to make changes gradually to your diet so as not to shock the system too much causing you to fail. Eating a good balance of all the food types will improve your health, increase your energy levels and generally make you feel great. You did not get over weight over night so do not expect to lose weight too quickly either. If you are losing more than 2lb per week you are losing lean muscle tissue causing you to become weaker not stronger.

There is a charity Zumba Party this Saturday 17th march at Darnhall Village Hall starting at 2.00pm for two hours. If you need a ticket you can buy one from me in class this week for the bargain price of £5. If you would rather just turn up on the day it is £7 at the door. There will be a raffle with some great prizes. The NMC is a great charity who support people in the community who have Muscular Dystrpohy.

If there are any dances you want to do then let me know in advance and I will ensure they go on the list. I will even let you do Day O and Billy Jean. lol.

In other news.
Thursday class at Sandiway 9.30am is from this week going to have a 25 min tone workout added at the end. If you want to just do the Zumba then nothing will change for you and there will still be a propper cooldown and stretch to ensure you are safe. if you want to stay for the extra session it is only £1 extra and you will need a mat or towel/blanket to lie on.

Many of you may know that 6 years ago my sister died. She had a condition called Miotonia congenita which is a muscle wasting disease. During her adult life she was employed by a charity called The Neoromuscular Centre in Winsford. Jackie and her friend Liza were amongst their first employees and continued to work there until they sadly died.
Myself and my family have kept in touch with the Centre and they recently asked if I would be willing to host a Zumba Party to help raise some much needed funds. Of course I said I would be delighted to help out. The details are on the events page of this site where you can pay by paypal to ensure your place. The Party will be held at Darnhall village hall (Nr Winsford) on March 17th from 2.00pm - 4.00pm. As always all levels are invited but we are limited to 60 places so book soon so your not dissapointed.

There will be a raffle on the day so bring some extra cash or if you wish to donate a little something as a prize i am sure it will be apperciated.

This centre needs all the income it can to help with the quality of life of people with muscular dystrophy. I am in no doubt that they prolong lives with the work they do.

The first week is over and we broke into it easily. Classes are starting to fill up again so if you have not been to class for a while then now would be the best time to restart your fitness campagne with Zumba fitness. I am looking forward to teaching you all a few new dances this year, some to work us hard others to have fun with.
A few little diet tips i have heard recently have sadly been found to be untrue. Amongst them are:-
If you eat standing up then all the calories fall out. Sadly not true

If you eat with your eyes closed the body does not see the colories so therefore they do not count. Again untrue.

If you eat other peoples food the calories were meant for them not you so dont count. Again wrong

I will continue to research these tips on your behalf to find if any of them are true and If I find one will shout it from the roof tops so everyone can hear.

What is true is that the more colours on your plate the more vitamins we get and beige food is not usually good for us. We need a good variety of food to lose weight so maybe try introducing one new food type each week into your diet, something you would not usually eat. If you like it great have it again if you dislike it then try something else next week.

There is no point staring in December as we only have a few classes left and I want you to get value for money.

Welcome to my first blog
I have recently signed up to a level 4 clinical nutrition course which means I will be able to give better advise on achieving goals through nutritional means. Once the course is completed I will be starting up some healthy eating classes. These classes will not be making you count points and calories like other programmes but giving you sound advise on how to change the way you view food on a permanent basis.
With the right food to fuel your body your energy levels will soar and you can better cope with the stress in life.
